Nhiếp hộ tuyến bình thường có kích thước siêu âm từ 18 – 20 gram, và thường được so sánh với quả óc chó vì hình dạng và độ lớn tương đương. 2 Nguyên nhân chủ yếu gây ra hiện tượng tăng kích thước nhiếp hộ tuyến

Việc tăng kích thước của nhiếp hộ tuyến không nhất thiết là do sự phì đại tuyến gây nên, thường được chia làm 2 nhóm nguyên nhân như sau:

Tăng do phì đại nhiếp hộ tuyến: hiện nay nguyên nhân của việc phì đại chưa được khẳng định, nhưng qua nhiều nghiên cứu khoa học, việc tuyến này phình to có liên quan mật thiết tới sự thay đổi nội tiết tố Testosterone ở tuổi trung niên. Nên việc phát triển phì đại của tuyến là không thể tránh khỏi, vấn đề là khi nào và với tốc độ nhanh hay chậm.

Tăng do yếu tố khác: đây là nguyên nhân không phì đại, thường gặp ở người có độ tuổi dưới 50, do lối sống sinh hoạt không điều độ và rượu bia có thể khiến cho nhiếp hộ tuyến bị sung huyết (do sinh hoạt, do ngồi làm việc lâu…) và tăng kích thước tạm thời, một số trường hợp bị viêm nhiếp hộ tuyến cũng khiến cho tuyến này sưng và to lên.

Ngoài ra, nếu đàn ông có nhu cầu tình dục cao khi còn trẻ thì khi về già cũng dễ dẫn tới nhiếp hộ tuyến có kích thước lớn hơn bình thường (tức là bình thường kích thước của họ đã > 20 gram chứ không phải do bệnh phì đại gây nên), do tuyến cần phải lớn lên để đáp ứng nhu cầu này, nhưng mô tế bào chưa xơ hóa.

Như vậy, tăng kích thước nhiếp hộ tuyến là một dấu hiệu đáng tin nhất để nhận biết phì đại nhiếp hộ tuyến. Tuy nhiên, cần theo dõi sự tăng trưởng của tuyến và đồng thời quan sát các triệu chứng khác và phiền toái do rối loạn đường tiểu gây nên để nắm rõ tình trạng bệnh của bản thân mình.
